All 18 Responses to the 2023 Rider Survey

The responses below have been edited for brevity against the following list of numbered questions.

  1. How was the change from BBQ to Taco Bar
  2. Were the Limericks something we should continue?
  3. If you were a first-time rider, how did you hear about P2P?
  4. Do you prefer the old traditional course or the new “reverse” course?
  5. If we went with more stick-on arrows and fewer placards would that work as well?
  6. What Checkpoint foods did you particularly like or not?
  7. Would you use a shuttle to/from the event from either ferry?
  8. Do you plan to come back next year?

Congratulations on a well-organized, challenging and smoothly run event.  Everyone involved was cordial and helpful.  However, there is an opportunity for improvement.

This ride is the hardest that I have ever participated in.  This was the ultimate test for a single-digit body (009) and the double-digit body of my riding buddy (067).  We were extremely disappointed that the last checkpoint had been dismantled with no sign of life at 4:50PM during the arrival of 4 riders.  There were no arrows pointing the way back toward the finish line.  At this T intersection there was confusion among us about direction, but after more than 10 minutes of discussion and map review, we finally figured out that we had to backtrack.  Your website says that "5:00PM - Last checkpoints close".  Whoever was in charge of the last checkpoint left early.  This cannot happen for future rides.  We were very disappointed to arrive at the finish after 5:00PM without streamers on the handlebars and without the finish line still up for photo ops.  There were riders behind us who were also probably disappointed.
Suggestions for improvement:
  1. The person in charge of the last checkpoint cannot leave early!
  2. Close to the 5 PM closing time, the person in charge should ask if any riders are behind those stopped at the checkpoint.  If so, it would be nice to wait even just for a few minutes beyond the 5PM deadline. There are old riders still trying there best to make it within the time crunch.
  3. If it is definite closing time for the last checkpoint, place an arrow or arrows pointing the direction toward the finish.  The T intersection this year raised the possibility of 3 options for getting back to Jensen Point Park.
Questions:
  1. I prefer the traditional summer barbeque menu similar to 2019: pork, beef, chicken options with classic potato salad, baked beans, rolls etc.
  2. Loved the limericks.  Any mind diversion technique away from the pain is a welcome addition. What happened to the music that was supposed to be our choice?
  3. Not my first time, but I learned about it from other cyclists.
  4. I prefer the traditional course (Vashon first, Maury second).
  5. I liked both the placards and arrows on tricky turns.  Also liked arrows along the way to assure that riders are on the right course. But I did stray of course because I was daydreaming and missed the arrows on the road. My buddy shouted at me to come back. Arrows are not fool proof.
  6. Liked the checkpoints with lively music.  It seems that there were fewer music-available sites this year than in 2019.
  7. The late ferry leaving from Point Defiance was the cause of many riders being late for the start.  You have no control over ferry operations.
  8. Don't know yet about next year.
Continue your great fundraising, production, advertising and organizing work for the P2P.  Job well done.

Rider 2
  1. Liked the Tacos.  Gotta work on the beer kegs for us. That was a miss.  Loved the napkins and plates.
  2. Limericks were funny. Keep ‘em.
  3. Another rider told us about it.
  4. First timer.  It was a solid, challenging ride.
  5. Stick on arrows were really good, even with my GPS.
  6. More bananas, sweet/salty.  Honestly, having that many stops was a bit distracting. 7 or 8 would be sufficient, but I get the theme of passport.
  7. I might use shuttle, but I'd likely come the eve before and stay at with friends.
  8. Plan to come back next year.

My bike derailleur blew up and another rider lent me his AllCity bike to finish the race.  Although not ideal for my knees, I did finish.  I wanted to thank the volunteers, especially the bike mechanic couple who gave me a ride so I could finish.  The bike was unrepairable for that day.

Rider 3

  1. The taco bar was great!! It was my first year so I can’t comment on if the tacos are better than the BBQ.
  2. YES!! I loved the limericks. Brilliant touch.
  3. I’ve been putting it off since I moved to Vashon in 2014, and then couldn’t back out when my Seattle friends wanted to do it.
  4. I loved the Maury Island weenie route.
  5. The arrows were really great.
  6. Turkey jerky and hard-boiled eggs were great. Watermelon was great.
  7. I live here, but I have more Seattle friends who would like to join next year and would use the shuttle.
  8. Yes, will be back next year.

Rider 4

Thanks for providing a space for feedback. But before that let me say THANK YOU for a well-run, super fun, and rewarding event. Good times were had, my legs were tired, and I felt a good deal of accomplishment at the end. This was my first time doing P2P, so please view my answers with that in mind.

  1. How was the change from BBQ to Taco bar? I would rather have tacos than BBQ, however part of that is we still had to ride back home to west Tacoma and tacos sit better in the guts if ya know what I mean....
  2.  I loved the Limericks! If they are not too difficult to do, I would say stick with it.
  3.  I have known about P2P for a long time, I used to own Old Town Bicycle and we had a lot of riders who did the event, and I think we may have even given some level of sponsorship way back in the beginning.
  4.  Again, first time rider, however I thought the course was great. And I can't imagine doing Burma Road the other direction lol.
  5. Actually, the placards were super helpful. However, from a rider’s perspective I would have been helped more by having the arrows on the signs be larger. Pretty much the reverse of the images on the placards this time, larger directional arrows, and a smaller P2P logo. Our group was riding pretty fast and at times the signs were hard to read until right on them. (More arrows on the ground is good for sure!) Also, regarding the placards, I would advocate moving them farther up the road, so riders get more warning there is a turn coming. We had a particularly scary situation where a left turn snuck up on us and one of our riders went down trying to slow down in time to make the corner. The placard, while a larger than normal one, was much too far down the hill where speeds were high, and the turn came up very fast. This was just one of many times where our group of five riders commented that the placard was too close to the turn being called out.
  6. Hmmmmm, there were one or two spot that had chocolate covered coffee beans and those seemed popular. (I know they were with me lol.) Also, one stand near the end offered pedialyte and that was great! Someone had chocolate drizzled bananas and I am sensing a theme in my remarks that I am a fan of putting chocolate on things.... The spot with the MoonPies was popular w our group.
  7. We did not utilize this shuttle service as we wanted to pedal to and from, however I bet folks liked it!
  8. Yup. I would admit to being a bit weather dependent and rain might get me to stay home. However, I think the P2P is excellent!
Rider 5

  1. Taco bar was "okay".  Liked the BBQ much better.
  2. Loved the Limericks!  Please continue.
  3. Second time rider.  Live on island so can't miss the adverts.
  4. I was fine with the course.
  5. I rode the weenie.  I find both the stick on arrows and placards helpful but I pretty much knew the course by looking at the course map.  Road it a couple times prior to the event.
  6. Didn't partake much in the Checkpoint foods.  Protein bars are always good.
  7. Live on island so shuttle not important for me.  Might be though for other people.
  8. Plan on riding next year if God is willing.

Thanks to all volunteers for their hard work and dedication to make this a really fun event.  Hopefully pictures will be posted like last year.  Only saw one person taking photos so not sure how many we'll get a chance to see.  Live streaming via YouTube might be fun.

Rider 6

  1. Never had the BBQ. Tacos were good, wish there was a veggie / vegan option. I’m sure catered tacos is easier to pull off for organizers so do whatever is easiest for you all.
  2. Yes loved the limericks! More please!
  3. Friend of a friend
  4. First time, so it worked for me! I think doing Maury hills is the highlight so I wouldn’t change the route direction back to “forwards”.
  5. If we went with more stick-on arrows and fewer placards would that work as well? Stick with the combination. Signage was excellent.
  6. No changes. Didn’t eat much other than some tortilla chips.
  7. Yes shutle, Tacoma side.
  8. Maybe, I’m not a road rider but I really enjoyed it on my mountain bike regardless.
Really nice job y’all, charming ride. What if you threw in some trail miles along the route? Hmmm…

Rider 7

Thanks for putting the ride together and hosting us on the island again. This is truly one of the highlights of my year and I look forward to riding it and enjoying the downtown every time.  I enjoyed the reverse route because it changed things up and had an opportunity to visit new sections of the island I’ve never seen before. Regarding food, the homemade cookies and pastries were amazing, but I was really sad that you didn’t have the traditional barbecue that I’ve come to love. The taco bar was ok, well managed, but a bit too spicy for me and I couldn’t eat it.  I have to admit I was really looking forward to the historical barbecue meal that you serve. Regarding a shuttle from the north end, I probably wouldn’t use it, because I like the flexibility to explore the island by car after, or stay in an Airbnb after the ride. Thank you for all the hard work and wonderful ride!

Rider 8

  1. Tacos were very good, but since this was the first year I participated, I can't comment on the change.
  2. Yes, they were a nice touch.
  3. I live on Vashon, so I've known about it since the beginning.
  4. Again, I can't compare it to the normal course since I have never done it before.
  5. In most places, but I have seen groups of people miss the turn onto 112th from 103rd, so there are places where the extra visuals are good, including the turn off points for the shorter courses.
  6. It was all good. The chocolate covered coffee beans were especially appreciated.
  7. Possibly, but since I live on the island, it's hard to say without knowing the schedule.
  8. Sure. I've wanted to do this for years and it was a lot of fun.
Thanks for all the hard work!

Rider 9
Hey!
Congratulations! It was another GREAT event, and everyone I saw had a great time! Except for Maury Island. That was [***] hard.

Maybe don't have the route go by my house, with its stocked cooler of iced beer, next time? I dropped out after mile 47 or something ... but I was seriously done. I should train or something for next year.

I'm sure my two buddies and I will be back ...

Rider 10

Hey folks, you solicited some feedback, here is mine.

  1. Fine, but both are great!
  2. I did laugh at them so why not?
  3. Third time
  4. I wouldn't call it "backward", how about "counter-clockwise" instead?  I thought this direction was just fine.
  5. Sure, I thought the course was very well marked, the only time I Had to ask a volunteer which way to go was leaving an aid station that had 50-mile and 80-mile riders going different ways.
  6. Watermelon is always good!  So are PB&Js.  One aid station had plums that were delicious!
  7. Yes, I'll never drive to this event again.  Next year I will probably park at Fauntleroy and ride to the start.
  8. Sure!  This was my third time and I love the event.
Rider 11

  1. I liked the BBQ better.
  2. Yes, they fit in well with the whole spirit of the ride. Add more, please!
  3. I’m a second time rider.
  4. Fun to see what only idiots got to see before. Boy, that was hard.
  5. I think a mix is good. There are spots that the arrows can be too subtle.
  6. I liked the nut rolls. Also, the Gatorade mix at Sandy Shores (I think) I used a bunch in my water bottle.
  7. Fortunately, I live on Maury and don’t have depend on early AM ferries.
  8. Yes! I aspire to be an idiot!
Other feedback:
  1. I think it would be good to add a sign going down to Gold Beach and Sandy Shores: “hairpin turn”. There were signs to slow down, but hairpin turn is really what the situation is and should be more effective.
  2. I think it might help to have signs indicating where and how far to the next toilet. We used the port a potty at Dockton Marina which we knew about only because we’re locals. It might help off-islanders to have a P2P sign there on Dockton road showing there’s a toilet in the park. And maybe by that big parking lot for horse trailer up by Dockton Forest.
  3. I was disappointed that the numbers were not assigned by age as in the past. Perhaps I speak only for myself,  but reaching the ‘elite’ of low 2 digit numbers is a source of pride. I imagine people that are 100+ don’t care.
Thanks very much for all your hard work, it was a lot of fun! And I pledge to volunteer next year for pre-race day work.

Rider 12

  1. tacos are great
  2. absolutely
  3. friends
  4. I thought this was great. admittedly, I have not done it the other way
  5. signage was good overall, stick on arrows are fine
  6. it's hard to have that many original options, so I think it's great as is
  7. no. just stay on island
  8. yes!
Rider 13

  1. This was my first time so I can't compare but I enjoyed the Taco.
  2. Yes, please. Those were pretty funny.
  3. First on https://westcoastcyclingevents.com/locations/washington/ Also got reminded on Seattle Cyclist discord.
  4. This was my first time so I can't compare but judging by the gradients, I'd say backwards made it easier.
  5. Either way works for me. I also had the route loaded on my bike computer.
  6. For the most part, I only refilled my water bottles and didn't grab much snack.
But there was one particular gummy thing at checkpoint 9 that was super sticky on my teeth, that is unlike the other gummy things. (I'm not good with American snack names)
  7. I used it on my way back to the ferry terminal. It was great to have that option.
  8. Yes. I think this was the most interesting bike event I've ever been to. There are other bike events with good routes, but the checkpoints were very unique and fun.
Thank you for organizing the event.
I had a lot of fun.

Rider 13
Great job on the weather this year! Responses below:

1)  I missed the bbq.
2) Loved the limericks! Bring them back.
4) I really liked the backwards course for the 50 miler. Otherwise, I’d have to be an idiot to ride Manzanita, Sandy Shores and Gold Beach.
5) Arrows are fine.
6) Food was great, except Lisabulla.
7) I’m an islander, so no need for shuttle.
8) won’t miss it!

Rider 14

  1. How was the change from BBQ to Taco bar? Great- preferred to BBQ - easier to eat after the ride
  2. Great idea!

  3. It made it easier (which is not a good thing in my view) - especially Burma Rd - going down the steepest part instead of up. For the 30-mile folks, Maury Island looked to be really hard - harder than doing it frontwards. Is there a way to do the route so that we go up the Burma Rd instead of down?
  4. Sure
  5. Chocolate covered coffee beans were aces! Zebette and her prostitutes get the prize for best checkpoint!
  6. No - I like to ride to and from the Tahlequah ferry
  7. I wouldn't miss it! It's my favorite ride and helps some great organizations. Thanks for doing it!

Rider 15

I think you all did a GREAT job on the P2P this year!   Similar to last year, I did the weenie ride.  I thought the signage this year was great (I managed not to get lost).
I’d like to give a shout out to the great checkpoint folks at stops 1-5 and the welcoming crew (pun intended) at the finish.

The BBQ was great as well.

I did have some hassles getting registered but in the end y’all were prepared for folks like myself and even though the ‘system’ was not 100% the folks with registration packets were ready to deal with it and it was a complete nonissue on race day.

I hope to attend again next year and maybe bring some more friends, would love to see the event flourish

Rider 16
Hi and thanks so much for another great event! Here’s my feedback:

Tacos were great. I also liked the BBQ. Both options are fine. My only complaint of the whole ride is that when we arrived at about 3:30, having completed the Idiot, they were out of beer (except for Miller Light - yuk). They did go get some more but by then, it was time to go. I suggest getting more beer or reserving a certain amount for Idiots, so it doesn’t get all used by the earlier/shorter course riders.

I liked the reverse order of the ride. Nice to get Maury out of the way early!

I was psyched to be in proper shape again this year. The ride went well. If I’m feeling like this again next year, I’ll almost certainly ride next year!

Rider 17

  1. Loved it all. (Was an observer who dined last year)
  2. Super fun and would love to see more. (see below)

Inspired me to work on my own limericks (which distracted me from the hills). Wonder if it could be somehow integrated more widely for participants... Here are a couple of my hill-climbing-distraction creations:
(- my BIL, David, has a mirror affixed to his glasses and is married to my sister)

Dave rides a cool bike with a rear view
He pedals ahead and does see you
But the one that he sought
Is the one that he courts
And she did finally shout out , "I do!"

I went for a ride with my sister
She rode very fast so I missed her
We rode up and down hills
And now I need pills
For my back ache and my big fat blister.

There was a fine rider named Sheyne
Who rode up the hills without pain
He rode very fast
Lest he be dead last
“He’s the BEST”, his teammates would ordain.

There was a fine rider named Sue
Who rode really fast. Oh, not true!
She tried really hard
Wouldn’t let down her guard
But she’d rather be watching birds coo.

  1. N/A
  2. N/A
  3. Seems like they serve very good and different purposes... placards to alert vehicles of riders and stickers to help riders.
  4. All fantastic.... so fun and yummy... hummus/crackers were 10/10.... watermelon awesome... plums from the neighbor at pirate’s stop were tops.... coffee beans with strawberries with Barbie was the bomb. The snacks were the only thing that helped me finish 50 miles (OK, I admit it, I took a few shortcuts so didn’t clock 58 .)
  5. N/A
  6. Yes, I think so... as long as the food stops are promised to be as awesome as they were this year.... amazing.
THANK YOU TO THE VOLUNTEERS AND ORGANIZERS!!! SUPER FUN!
Rider 18
  1. I much prefer the BBQ - my stomach was upset overnight after the event & through the following day … so even the thought of a taco bar now does not appeal. Bring back BBQ!
  2. OMG, LOVED, LOVED, LOVED the limericks. Since the first 2 checkpoints had them, I anticipated that ALL of the checkpoints would have them so was sorely disappointed that there was only 1 more (I think) along the weasel route. I wondered if perhaps you could have folks who register for the event submit P2P-themed limericks (with no promise that they will be used) — and then the powers-that-be could choose which ones to display along the route. It might give riders yet another reason (as if we need more reasons!!) to ride, ride, ride!!
  3. This was my 3rd time riding …
  4. Since I’d only done the weenie prior to this year, I was (initially) excited to do the last part of the idiot this year since the other 2 times were the same weenie, and on Vashon. An added bonus was that we live on Maury, so we were happy to be ‘hosting’ the first leg of the event on home turf. We also took advantage of living on Maury by riding lots prior to the event, along the weenie and weasel route to get prepped for the event. All in all, it was a more challenging ride for the weenies, but I loved it all the same.
  5. I kinda like the combo — signage was good this year, thanks!! I think the placards are also a benefit to drivers — I doubt they see the stick-on arrows.
  6. In general, prefer natural sweet things (watermelon) versus unnatural (espresso coffee beans) & salty things).
Very yummy, do it again! > good watermelon (Gold Beach), Hummus and pita chips (Sandy Shores, I think), roasted potatoes with ketchup (Young’s Corner) or with salt for dipping (Lisabeula), grapes (The Leaning Church), Ruffles (Shawnee)
Not so much > beef jerky, espresso coffee beans
  7. Nope, we have a house on Maury so will start from there.
  8. Definitely!
I would consider volunteering before the day of the ride —
Thanks again,
Rider 19
  1. First time participant but I loved the tacos
  2. I ABSOLUTELY LOVED THE LIMERICKS
  3. multiple friends (one who grew up in the area and another who had done the event in the past
  4. First time participant, no comment
  5. I like having both
  6. Checkpoint one needed more than oranges. With there being no restaurants open until after the ride started many people struggled to get a decent breakfast in
  7. Possibly
  8. Probably not next year but I plan to do this event again sometime in the next five years

Pat and crew of P2P,

P2P was amazing this year! Weather was perfect. Volunteers were cheerful and helpful. As usual I gained weight on the ride even though I completed the Idiot. I’ve done P2P four times and it’s my favorite ride in the Northwest.

I thought the reverse route was better than the traditional route. We rode Gold Beach in the cool of the day instead of 2:00 pm baking heat, then we did the west side roads in the shade of the afternoon. Some of those beach climbs don’t get any easier but I thought Burma Rd was easier going the “reverse” direction.

Food was excellent at all locations. The homemade sandwiches at the half-way point (Windermere?) are always a welcome sight (spicy mayo and fresh tomatoes are the best). I appreciated the Electrolit drink at all the locations. It tasted good and didn’t upset my stomach like some drinks do. My favorite rest stop was Star Wars. Where did they get the life size R2D2?!

Did I miss the place where they play your favorite song? That was fun a couple of years ago.

Signage was excellent. Placards or stick ons are ok with me.

My only regret was trying to catch the 5:55 am ferry at Point Defiance. Since the first two boats were going to be canceled I drove to Southworth because I needed to start the ride as soon as possible so I could back to get back to Olympia by a certain time.

The taco food was AMAZING. Please bring them back.

Rider 20
Hi!

My ride was greatly altered by asthma this year, it slowed me way down and robbed my legs of oxygen!. But even taking that into account, I don't think I will ride next year if the weenie route stays on Maury Island; it was just too relentless for me. The 2021 route was a lot more fun.

The tacos were great, the BBQ was great, either one works!
I applaud your zero-waste approach for the meal--I wish all organizations would make the effort to do that. I know it is a lot of work and I appreciate it.

Arrows would work fine to replace placards, the route was easy to find.

Thanks for your amazing work.

Rider 21

Here are my thoughts on the P2P, as a first time rider...

  1. In my personal opinion, any type of food is good as long as there is a vegetarian option ;)
  2. The limericks were entertaining to read during the ride. I think that as long as there are people willing to create limericks then there’s no harm in continuing them.
  3. I heard about the P2P through word of mouth from my boss, who rode the P2P in previous years.
  4. I have never ridden the entire course forwards, but I have ridden many of the hills before. I cannot even imagine riding up gold beach at the end of the ride, so I felt like it’s probably easier to ride the course backwards.
  5. I think either way is fine as long as there are enough of them. My one concern is the clean-up of the stick-ons. Does somebody pick them up eventually? Or are they biogeradable?
  6. The fruit was a lifesaver, but I was disappointed that there were no pickles! Pickles can help get rid of cramps, and I have seen them at other supported rides, so I was expecting to see them at the P2P as well. Lack of pickles is my only gripe about the P2P this year. Otherwise, it was a very fun experience.
  7. I live on Vashon, so no.
  8. Hell yeah! (I think.)
Rider 22

  1. tacos vs bbq?  Both were good; no net win either way
  2. Limericks were fun.
  3. my first time
  4. I enjoyed seeing Maury, but I think the other direction is nicer.
But I'm just a weenie so far.
  5. I saw the arrows before I saw the signs.  I suspect arrows are more
    cost-effective.
  6. No opinion; the water was key, though.
  7. I live on-island, so a shuttle helps me relatively little.  It
might find it useful, but would expect to abstain, to leave it for the
    ferry-folk.
  8. Yes; I like the P2P and I like how it motivates my riding the rest
    of the year.

Rider 23

  1. I preferred the BBQ significantly.
  2. Limericks were great. Humor helps on a ride like this.
  3. N/A
  4. Definitely preferred counterclockwise on Vashon. Maury was fine, but maybe too much for the Weenies. Maybe they should stay on Vashon.
  5. Placards are easier to see than the arrows on the pavement.
  6. Favorite snacks: BLT, chocolate covered coffee beans and strawberries, orange slices, banana pieces & peanut butter.
  7. N/A
  8. I plan to ride in 2024, too.

Suggestion: Let riders print out their passports at home, and start riding from the ferry terminals. From the south is easy as it is mostly downhill to Jensen Point. They could then do a loop to the Shawnee stop later. From the north riders could have alternate routes that don’t do 80 miles and still end up at Jensen Point.

Thanks to all the volunteers. Great job.
Rider 24

First thanks for another year and another great ride.

Loved the reverse course.
PLEASE bring back the BBQ.  The BBQ has been the payoff at the end and we love it!
Pit stops… it would be cool to get quick liquid fuel like at the stops further out…maybe I missed it but I only found water this year.
Regardless, love the event and the community.
BBQ!!!!

Rider 25

  1. No problem with the change.  Nice group of people!
  2. Anything to distract us from riding is fun.  I enjoyed the limericks.
  3. N/A
  4. HARDER!  It was fun to have the opportunity to ride Maury's hills and it is a whole different beast than the first 6 stations going the other direction.  I would recommend returning it to its original direction next year (or change the name- because it ain't no "Weanie").  Comments I heard while riding those Maury hills were people wishing they had another gear and not sure they had the legs to do the Weasel (as they had planned to do)
  5. I like the combo.  I think we need more signage to warn riders of unsafe conditions.  Some of the hills are gravelly and potholes, uneven... and riders were flying in = some scary conditions.
  6. More protein, carb food!  Last year felt a lot more loaded in the food dept.
  7. N/A
  8. Every year until my body says NO!
Thank You!

Rider 26

  1. I liked it, it was quite good, be nice to have a little more staff to move the line faster.
  2. Really liked them, several were pretty funny.
  3. N/A this is my 5th or 6th
  4. Best thing ever. Getting Maury done in the morning means you aren't roasting there in the afternoon. Seriously hard to stay hydrated out there some years. Also gets the non-idiots out there too. Vashon stays more shaded and cool in the afternoon.
  5. I wouldn't cut back on the placards, they are a reminder that the next turn is at hand. The stickers are the reinforcing feature as you make the turn. Remember, after a couple of hours in the saddle your head isn't really crisp.
  6. Bacon sandwich, on white bread. PBJs, and salted potatoes, and coke.
  7. N/A I live on Vashon.
  8. Once an idiot always an idiot. Yes I'll be back, sadly.
Nice job this year and thanks for all the work,
Rider 27
Hi there!

I was a first-time rider this year — I heard about the ride from a former Vashon resident.

A few thoughts in no particular order:
- I did the weasel — a brutal course in the best possible way. Loved it! Will absolutely be back for the idiot next year!
- Volunteers were absolutely lovely and extremely helpful. I’ve done many organized rides like this, and these were far and away the most supportive and kind volunteers!
- the Limericks were cute, I enjoyed.
- The route was well marked and easy to follow.
- The ferries definitely made for a rough timing in the morning, but nothing to it but to make the 5:10am next year!
- I was disappointed the meal didn’t include a vegetarian option. I certainly ate my weight in cookies, but it would have been nice to have some real food. A vegetarian option would be easy and wonderful in the future!

Thanks so much for organizing, already looking forward to next year!

Overall, this was an amazing event run by amazing people. Can’t say enough about the effort you all put into this.

  1. LOVED IT. Super tasty and nice portions.
  2. Yes. I really appreciated the humor on tough ascents
  3. N/A
  4. Harder, but great. Loved the change.
  5. Signage was beyond excellent this year.
  6. LOVED the fresh plums at the last Maury stop. Loved the variety overall, but some were a bit sugar heavy (more like candy) though vs fruit, healthy.
  7. No. I live on the island
  8. Yes!

Rider 29

  1. Tacos always win.
  2.  The limericks were fun, keep them!
  3. N/A
  4. I rode the weenie and liked it better on Maury than on Vashon
  5. I like the placards. They're helpful
  6. They were all good!

  7. Yes!!!
And, a MASSIVE thank you to all the volunteers! They make the ride so much fun.

Rider 30
I’m the wife of a rider, who rode in 2019 and 2023.
In 2019 I volunteered with Sandi and Michelle (Core Centric) at the S Pohl Road stop.
This year I was the crazy asking for the cowbell at the finish :)

This is a huge event and takes so much time and effort and organizing to put on - thank you for your work!

Additional feedback:

- to make sure more people are enthusiastically on at all times welcoming the riders at the finish.
There was no cowbell at one point because people were “on break” and riders were coming in to minimal fanfare - they are working so hard and it felt anti-climactic.
Cyclists love that fanfare at the end - I think it means more than we might imagine. I love how Euros bang on cans (and whatever) when riders go by.
Before we came to the finish we waited for Dylan at the end of the driveway beating wooden spoons on dog bowls - he LOVED it.

- I heard the food was kind of strange offerings based on where the stop was on the ride? Maybe this has already been considered, but perhaps a suggested small food menu could be created across all the stops, like each stop does two things that are healthy but have energy, simplifying it…the one we did in 2019 had hard boiled and pickled eggs with salt and watermelon juice shots - delightful and riders loved it.

Thank you again for all your hard work and for asking about people’s experience.

I can help cowbell next year if you like. :)

Rider 31

the signage was great. They wished they knew each stations working hours. So, the riders could decide if they could make to the station before closing or not.
They liked the food, but wished that there was more options like quacamole and fajita veggies.
Beer, this year we got the baby kegs, we should definitely get only big kegs next year.

Rider 32
  1. Loved the Taco Bar. Thank you!
  2. Loved the Limericks.
  3. 13th time rider
  4. I found it brutal starting with Maury, but hey, pain is pain. The gift was Burma in reverse. A "breeze," as opposed to impossible.
  5. I thought the ratio of stick-on arrows to placards was good. But the feedback from first-timers is what matters to this question.
  6. All good.
  7. I stay overnight.
  8. Hell ya’
Thank you Lindsay, Pat, and all the volunteers by keeping this ride alive! You're the best!!
Rider 33

  1.  This was my first time riding the event so I can't speak on the BBQ. The Taco bar was tasty, but there were limited options for me as a pescatarian. Even the refried beans had meat!
  2. The limericks were a highlight. My riding buddy and I were a bit disappointed that they tapered off toward the end of the ride.
  3. Our neighbors were registered but then scored a great campsite they couldn't pass up. They gifted us their registrations. I'd heard about the ride before, but never looked into it as I'm primarily an off-road rider.
  4. As a first time rider, I thought the course was great.
  5. II found the stick-on arrows much more effective than placards. Lots of places for eyes to look when they're up, only the road when they're down.
  6. I liked apples and peanut butter, tortilla chips, and fresh strawberries.
  7. Yes! I used the shuttle from the ferry and would have used a shuttle back to the ferry if it was available.
  8. TBD. As I said, I'm primarily and off-road rider, but really enjoyed the chill vibe of this event. If I can convince a few friends to join I would definitely consider.

Rider 34

  1. Loved the taco bar. I liked the BBQ, but the taco bar is superior.
  2. Fun idea
  3. N/A
  4. It was great to ride backwards – it was a hot day, and it was much nicer to ride Maury in the cooler morning since it’s more exposed to the sun. I was strangely disappointed about not riding Burma the hard direction.
  5. It would be fine with me.
  6. Loved the potatoes, coca cola, grapes, and chocolate dipped bananas. The sandwich stop is great- the white bread PB&J hit the spot. I always appreciate the water availability and electrolyte options.
  7. I wouldn’t since I live close to the start/finish line, but I like the idea.
  8. Absolutely! I hope this ride continues for many years to come.

1 $210 was an expensive event to have to sadly skip after the smoke came in.  I only registered Tues 9/6 so in case my shirt order was not placed yet, was wondering if I could just get a credit for next year’s shirt?  Otherwise, do you need more cash to mail it? (hoping not)
Thanks,

2 This was my third P2P. Yes, we were hosed by the ferries, starting a couple hours late, but that's certainly not P2P's fault at all. Starting earlier was a great idea, wish I could have actually done just that! But, everything was perfect, again. I'm a stickler about making sure routes are properly marked, and yours are the best I have seen in 30 years of biking. The volunteers are all top-notch, there was not a weak one in the bunch, all great. The bbq was fantastic. I have absolutely no gripes at all about the ride, other than it's ungodly hard. The hills seemed steeper this year, but that's age I reckon. Your whole ride is fantastic. You couldn't have that ride without the humor aspect you have throughout, it's just too hard to do, and would be worse is you were really serious about it. Congratulations on another great ride, I'm totally happy with your whole operation.

3 First, big thanks for all the hard work. Despite all the challenges this year, I absolutely enjoyed it. I did not miss a turn or a hill (thanks to signage) and got all the support at every checkpoint (food/water and shoulder to cry)
Last year, there was a ferry at 6:50 starting at Seattle. This year, the posted times were not convenient. Moreover, posted times were canceled in the morning and I was able to get on the ferry around 8:50 from Seattle. However, I did not know that the ferry goes to Vashon and Southworth. I accidentally got into the wrong lane and that led me to an extra trip to Southworth. Loved to learn that there is a place called Southworth but caused me to start at 10. It did not cause much of a problem for me but good to call out to be careful and not be an idiot like me in the next year's communication.
I knew there would be heat and smoke and it wasn't as bad as I expected. I felt the roads were slightly worse than last year or maybe not. Hard to say.
Despite the late start, all the stations made sure (by communicating with each other) that I get the support and also get to eat at the BBQ. Box worked and glad I got to eat.
Catching the ferry back to Seattle was the real problem. I waited ~3 hours to get the ferry. I wish I could have reached home earlier or booked a hotel.
Loved another year of P2P and I feel my legs today. Thanks again!

4 HI!  Thanks for the opportunity to provide input.   I have to say that i would not change a thing.   The only items that could be improved upon (potholes, smokey skies,  and ferry) are totally out of your control.

I like that potholes and other "challenges" are marked on the road with spray paint.   I live on the island and am familiar with roads, but I especially like the "P2P SLOW" signs.   Great reminder for those of us who know the roads and essential for those who do not.  Another GREAT thing was the road safety reminders by the fellow in the referee shirt at the start.  While we all know we should yield to oncoming traffic, it's easy to get caught up in following the P2P signs and forget.   Also mentioning how all roads are two way and oncoming may not stop even though you have a stop sign..... etc.

I heard several different groups of riders visiting the island for the first time comment on how well marked the course is and that there was so much support with all the rest stops.
 Loved it!

5 This is great, thank you! And please advise who I should talk to about helping with a 2022-2023 event. I can’t take it on solo, as I have competing responsibilities, but with co-chairs it seems doable.   I have a freshman rower, so have at least four years of interest/loyalty and a career to offer from fundraising and sales.

6 It was fun!
I have no complaints, and no obvious suggestions.  Your team was a
delight.  The routes were clear (I'm a Vashon resident and this wasn't
my first ride, so that helped too).  The checkpoints were nicely
spaced, and the route was as brutal as advertised.
I had a great time.
Thanks!

7 The point defiance ferry was a bummer and I lost hope there and went home.
Granted, I was planning on doing the tourist and having lunch with my wife at the turnaround.
No idiot for me.
I thought communication and logistics were all good.

Look forward to trying again next year.

8 It was a wonderful event, as always!  I would not recommend any changes… your volunteers are all fantastic.  I hope you can find the energy and drive to keep the ride going despite all the stressors of the event.

9 Great work overall. You and Zabette deserve lots of credit for the best ride anywhere. The roads were downright “life threatening”. Way worse than last year , so King Co. should do something. It looks like they are letting things go back to gravel. On the volunteers, they were really fun and supportive. Food was outstanding at all locations. So all that needs fixing is the ferries, the smoke and the roads. I hope the rumor about this being the last P2P are not true. Perhaps paying the both of you would encourage you to continue.  Since I finally got the number one I honored the oldest rider number by finishing for the 11th time. I guess I am the oldest idiot. Thanks, Again,

10 First, top notch event.  Y’all did a GREAT job, it was a wonderful if painful experience!  I hope to do it again!

Pro’s:
- volunteer enthusiasm & checkpoint sustainance
- generally great signage (with one minor issue, I’ll note that below)
- great post event BBQ and hangout
- pre-event information including the email a few days prior were complete and correct
- I think your road condition warnings were spot on including the “P2P SLOW” signage on the course.  Your roads are not nearly as crappy as ours in Oregon so I was pleasantly surprised how relatively good they are but appreciated the heads up, since crashing at speed downhill takes the edge off the buzz

Suggestions:
We were supposed to do the 30-mile weenie, but we both missed the signage for the turnoff.  We only realized that after checkpoint 7 when we thought “Hmmm, wonder where that turnoff is….”.  Being pretty zapped at that point we just called it a day and did not quite finish in style.  I’d suggest making the turn there PAINFULLY OBVIOUS maybe even putting a person there to direct.  I don’t think we were the only ones who missed that.

Thank you for a great event.  I’m sure it’s a PITA to put on so kudos to all of you who make it happen.

11 It was an awesome event!
The aid stations were well stocked and friendly, fun
Maybe a couple more PortaPotties or a clear idea of where they are located?
Staffing was all very helpful and friendly.
The BBQ was amazing!  Our first time and we would come again.
Signage pretty good -- we did have a question at the Talequah Ferry -- maybe another sign indicating the route up the hill to the east of ferry.
   1st Time

12 I think all the the ride (all the parts you could control) were spectacular.
The places of road hazards were well marked.
The course lived up to it’s name as passport to pain. No lying there!
Amazing support!
We will be back next year as this may be my new favorite ride of the year.
   2nd time

13 Loved the ride as always.
Course signage and road alerts are great. Sandy Shores is a God blessed heap of a road. Worst on the island near as I can tell, especially the bottom 200 feet.
BBQ was awesome, and love the rowing crew pitching in for a zero waste Vashon dish duty. That BBQ crew is legit.
Checkpoints were great, but Lisabeula with Kelly could have only been better if "Walter" had screamed "You're entering a world of pain" a little louder, and then told me to F-you more than 3 times. Hats off to the Top Gun crew for bringing it, we heard it multiple times at the BBQ. Best station for crew and prep.
The air was a major bummer, we can navigate around the roads, and thank you for the hours it must have been marking all those pitted spots, frankly I'll use them the rest of the year in bike and car. However, the air sucked by midday, and that was rough.
Love you guys doing this, and hope it continues for the rowing team, but totally understand how much work this is, and really appreciate you guys doing it. It really is a key piece of what makes the Island....well The Island.

14 I can’t describe what a wonderful experience P2P was yesterday. I never thought that an event with Pain in the name would be something I would enjoy. Everyone working the event was so warm and welcoming. The climbs were definitely hard and my legs got so tired that they revolted a little on the last 2 hills and required a little walking. The red carpet finish put a smile on my face and the climbs were quickly forgotten (not really). The finish line BBQ was fabulous. Thank you for hosting the ride.

15 I wish you had perfect control over the Ferries, Weather, Smoke and the roads.

I’m amazed at the many things you do so we can forget the pain of the screaming legs and lungs. A valiant but futile effort.

I’m impressed with the volunteers you are able to assemble. Cheerful, funny and kind. That and the accomplishment of surviving 10k elevation gain in 80 miles makes it all worth it.

I will be back to ride it again.

16 For the second straight year, I am blown away at how amazing this ride is.  All in all, this is the best organized ride in the PNW.  It is just fun and the people are nice.  The scenery is peaceful and spectacular.  It is hard and once you finish you feel proud!  I made some good friends with my fellow riders, and remember many kind faces from last year!

I feel the pre ride communications were totally fine, and the day of chats at each station were uber useful.  I took a Friday night ferry and had no issues, and a Sunday morning ferry with even less issues!  Ferries are what they are and they add some charm to the adventure.  Checkin was 30 seconds and easy.

Coarse signage was really appreciated and very easy to see.  Sometimes I had to ask which way out of a checkpoint but people told me.  The road conditions were worse than last year but were so well marked that I felt safe at all times.  Kudos to all who marked the road so carefully and thoughtfully.

Checkpoints were fun and a bit more subdued this year but everyone was so nice and encouraging.  Fuel and liquids were perfect; no need to eat too much but just enough to keep blood sugar high enough.

As with everything, the people make the event worthwhile.  As I said before, this is the best organized ride around, mostly because of the kind and generous folks who volunteer.

Bbq and finish were rad and so fun!  Really appreciated the two red dressed ladies, too much fun!  Food was tasty (damn those were great pickles!) and nothing better than local beer!  It just felt like community.

I plan to do this ride and participate in this event in some way for the rest of my life.

17 It sounds like you were aware of the ferry situation. I live just a couple of miles from the Point Defiance ferry and after arriving at 7am for the 7:35 departure, I was told the next ferry wasn't scheduled until sometime after 10am, which put me past the 9:30 am start time. The wsdot app also stated that the Southworth ferry, which would have been my second option, was not scheduled.
So, I was unable to attend my first ever P2P, very disappointed. I guess next year I will have to wait for the day of registration.

Thanks anyway

18 Signage was great (better this year I heard), although my brother said it could have been more obvious at the N ferry turn down the steep hill. Otherwise, great race, loved all the energy at each stop!

19 Well what a day! My first mistake was going for the 8:15 ferry from Fauntelroy, and thinking it wouldn’t be busy (haha). I was just a couple of cars from the front of the line - too late to ditch the car and bike, so was in for the 2 hour wait. Made it to the start line at 11am, but was still determined to give the idiot a go. Given how late I was, I was amazed to find some of the checkpoints still manned. Thanks SO much to those who hung around for me. Riding through the heat of the day, definitely needed those water top-ups, and a bit too much food (everyone taking pity on the last rider!). And the hills went on and on …

I hardly saw another rider all day, but in the last mile finally found a fellow rider and we rode into the finish together (although the finish line was no longer there!). A bunch of bananas each for coming last was a nice gesture :-). Thanks for saving a bit of BBQ food back as well - little did I know that I might not see food again for a while… the ferry home was even more of a disaster. Waiting in line from 7pm till after 10pm, finally getting home after 11.

Mega day out. Thanks so much to the organizers, volunteers, other riders, and people of Vashon. May your island remain beautiful and your ferry service improve!

20 First, thanks so much for an awesome event! I'll definitely be back next year. Below are some thoughts:
- playing the song I chose for me was amazing!
- I'd love an option for a super idiot. Maybe 100/12k? Even if its just repeating parts of the route
- the snacks were solid. I would love more iced coffee and peanut butter to go with the bananas
- the pothole marking really helped
- the volunteers directing us at certain points on the route we're really helpful. I'd just suggest making sure everyone uses the same motions, because a couple people make motions that made it seem like I was supposed to go when it was actually meant for cross traffic

All in all, amazing! I appreciate all the hard work and communication.

21 It was perfect in every way. I did skip the evil twins at the end of the 50 mile course.   I was told by 3 people that it was too busy too skinny and Not fun. Also I was cramping by then.  They had also skipped it after doing it in previous year's. Otherwise l changed from the weenie to the weasel which was the right move  For me.   I really appreciate the lack of paper plates and disposable  cutlery et cetera at the end. That was remarkably good.   The people at each of the stops were ridiculous and perfect. I appreciate them a lot.  the riders were so encouraging and helpful especially when I missed the turn.    Thanks to all of you.
   First time

22 It was fun!  BBQ by Smoking Pete is the best. Really excellent. Glad you had enough.

Great crowd, and most riders understood the spirit of the event. Not a race, a happening. A few needed encouragement to say hello as they roared by.

You might consider offering more weenie circuits - so that a rider who did a weenie circuit one year could pick up where they left off and do another 30 mile loop, and then the third year finish off on Maury Island.  Gives people a reason to come back, gets you more repeat business from those who might be intimidated otherwise. Even give them an award/recognition for finishing the third year? A Spécial t shirt for sale?

And give people on the island a chance to sign up as volunteers. It is an inside deal on who or where to go to hear about this, either in prep support or day of support.  You have an excellent track record, that attracts volunteers.

But also give day of the event volunteers a way to at least ride part of the course - maybe choose a weenie loop for volunteers?
   2nd time

23 It was a fun family day.  A few drivers were not so considerate. The only downside for us.
Thanks!
    First time

24 This was my 3rd Passport2Pain and I want to commend you on a fantastic ride.  The volunteer support is off the charts and all the aid stations are incredible as is the food and drink at the finish!

My only suggestion is to improve the course marking.  This year in particular, it seemed like many interactions had no markings and some of the signs were almost hidden (like the one on Vashon Hwy in downtown) and some got knocked over.  I think it would help a lot if you had signs AND arrows at every turn and if you incorporated something called "confidence marking" that is regularly used in trail runs where there are occasional arrows on the road even if you have not seen an intersection in some time just to give you confidence that you are on the right track.  Although I have done this ride in the past I almost took the wrong turn twice and had to ask for directions once.

It also could not hurt if you let people know there are only two sailings Saturday morning but I realize that these schedules might be in constant flux. :(

I plan to be back!
     2-6x

25 First off thanks for putting on! Secondly, purchased four pair of socks and have requests for two more pair? Any chance of purchasing at this date?

Comments for improving: At the 30 mile cut off much bigger sign or person directing. Rode right by it. All we saw was P2P sign pointing straight up road. Maybe a 10, 20, 30, 40mile mark on road for first timers. Smaller maps with bigger font that more easily fit in pockets.

Finish line ladies great. Food fabulous. All the beer one could drink. What can I say about that?  Cloth napkins and real plates and silverware that are washed and saved. Two thumbs up for that.

Love to see potholes filled (I’m sure little you can do to encourage that) but for first time riders who have never been on roads a bit challenging.

Keep on keeping on.
   First time

26 First time participant. Check-in was a breeze. Volunteers were all in. BBQ and beer were wonderful. The weather (which you don’t control) was fine. Road conditions were challenging for those who hadn’t rode the course before (I live on island so I knew the score). The finish line was really fun! The whole event was so Vashon!

I thought the signage was a little bit confusing. I rode the 30 mile course, which is actually 34.8 miles, and thought the cut off at Cemetery Road and Westside Highway was confusing for the 50 mile riders. I heard several complaints about that. One other confusing sign was after the stop at the high school the sign sent people down Monument Road instead of back down to Tramp Harbor, which is specified on the map. Not sure if the route was changed or what happened.

I had a great time and am really appreciative of all the hard work everybody put into this. I look forward to riding again next year. I’m also interested in helping out in some capacity, just not on the day of the event.

27 Despite the ferry hassles, road conditions and smoke, I had a great day.
I think the communication around the ride was perfect, the road signage worked for me, the checkpoints were all great (I did miss the bacon though) and the finish/BBQ was fun.
So for the things you folks had control over I think you did great.

I did hear talk about this being the last P2P, that would be sad.

thanks for everything you do/did.

28 First, thank you. We know that putting on these events takes a great deal of effort. We greatly appreciate those that take on the feat.

Overall, the experience was excellent! We signed up for the event at the beginning of the season when we were looking for a bit of training motivation. COVID got us both before it became a pandemic and its been a long road back. We were looking for events in areas that we are potentially interested in fr relocation and the Seattle area is at the top of the list. As soon as we started reading the pithy commentary on the event website, we were sold. Both of us being in the marketing and advertising industry, the transparent descriptions and rye humor rang true to us.

The volunteers were wonderful at each aid station. Please extend our thank you to them. The road signage was excellent - even the Burma road detour! And the BBQ at the end was delicious. We walked away from doing our 70 mile version (having had to pull the plug after 15) with a desire to do a bit more strength work over the winter - a perfect motivation.

We stayed at an Airbnb on the island down by check point 9. Our host Joe mentioned that the neighborhood would love to host that rest stop. While I don’t have his direct contact information, his address is: 11031 Patten Lane Southwest, Vashon, WA 98070, United States.

Thank you again!

29 I was a first-time rider at the event and was very impressed with the support.  The aid station and all other volunteers were fun and supportive.  I thought communications were good and didn't have any surprises.  Course markings were fine as long as I paid attention.  BBQ was spectacular. And if you can control the Ferries, weather and road conditions, you have a higher calling than being a Race Director!
     First time

30 The ride was awesome, it is really made a success due to the fantastic volunteers at the stops.  They were all super friendly and fun loving.  The island is also very beautiful, albeit hilly, I thought the roads had some issues but the pot-holes were marked very well.

The ferry cancellations from Tacoma definitely impacted my ride time.  Next year I plan to come over the night before and stay on the island so I am able to start earlier.  Due to the late ferry, I began pedaling lot later than planned.

Sadly I rode right past the lunch stop.  Not sure if I was delirious at that point or just distracted but I missed it.

I wish there had been a porto-potty at a couple of the stops.  I usually ride alone so leaving my bike outside a public store or library I have a perceived theft risk.  I feel more comfortable leaving it if there are other bikers or volunteers around who can be on alert.

A fantastic event and I will be back next year!

31 Wow, what a party!

It was great fun and I’m grateful for the hot weather. Cold is not fun.

All the volunteers were amazing and so generous!

I sort of did get lost a couple times on the tourist route. I think directional signs were posted on the opposite side of the road and I went past them. Truly enjoying the immense beauty of the island was why.

How could a person not come back again? Bravo for the easy rides.

Cheers and many thanks,
   First time

32 First - thank you for putting on the ride.  It was a shame that there were so few participants this time.  Given the hurdles, I suppose it was a decent turn out.

Positives - I think you guys did a great job marking the course (both the turns and the broken bits on the road).  The volunteers and station operators were wonderful.
Negatives - (largely out of your control). We had several very negative interactions with drivers on the road.  One of the closest passes I've ever had in my life (and I've been intentionally clipped by wing mirrors) plus lots of negativity from drivers.  My suspicion is that most of those were off-islanders who were visiting and wanted to be rude as I ride on Vashon frequently and don't typically experience any issues.

Otherwise - great ride.  I hope this can continue for years to come.
    First time

33 Great event as always! The thought, care, and fun the volunteers put into this event truly set it apart.
   2nd time

34 Thanks for a great 2022 ride.

All the communication prior to the ride was stellar, in my opinion: fun, informative, encouraging, and not too much of it. Appreciate the efforts in that regard.

Check-in was smooth - nice to get help pinning on my number.

Once we were ready to head out, it wasn't clear if we just go ... ? -- or if there was some volunteer who was going to send us off ... ? It didn't seem to matter

Course signage was a little sparse in some areas -- when we exited from Vashon HS, there was no sign indicating a left turn ... though we knew that was the way out. I also thought we were going to go back down Ellisport Rd --& the small sign indicating we should instead head right at the fork down Monument Rd was just at the last minute -- we almost missed it.

Also, at Young's Corner, checkpoint 12, an off-island weasel rider (my niece's friend) arrived and after the pitstop, he continued west on Cemetery Rd, getting lost ... it'd be nice if the JLScott crew there could've helped him realize he needed to go back down the hill from where he came.

Road conditions weren't perfect,  but I think all the hype about poor roads & potholes made me more attentive while riding so thanks for the hype. And the chalk marks around or along hazardous pavement were excellent.

Volunteer Staffing seemed lighter than when I did the ride last, in 2019 -- checkpoint personnel weren't quite as enthusiastic as I recall either. I remember the music playing at checkpoints in 2019 was particularly welcome. There seemed to be less of that thus year.

I sorely missed the bacon and cold, red seedless grapes at checkpoint 5. It would've been nice to have more variety overall -- it adds to the anticipation of getting to the next rest stop - & a tad of disappointment when the turkey jerky appears ... again.

Finish Area was good -- love having the flower bouquets, trophy, & tour de France pic for photos.  Great also to have a good Playlist going all afternoon.

BBQ was awesome!! No changes!! Do it again,  do it again!

BTW will you do it again? We heard a rumor at the BBQ from a longtime participant that this was the last year pleeeeease let that not be true!

Thanks again for all your work.

35 Great ride, no complaints. I only have a beef with myself for missing the turn signs and riding off course, way too many times. I would try and concentrate but loose concentration when I needed it the most. Are there guide dogs for this?
Great job of putting on the event, thanks!

36 This was my first year participating and was impressed! The organization of this event was outstanding. My husband road the 50 and I rode the 30. We were able to ride together until the cut-off. He had the navigation on his bike computer, but I had zero concerns when I broke away as the signage was so good throughout the route I knew I would have no issues.

The volunteers for this event were OUTSTANDING! Everyone was high energy, encouraging and made you me so happy to be part of the event. Each check point with the individual themes were creative and fun. All of the snacks were outstanding (special shout out to the home made banana bread - YUM!). Also loved the "Walk-up Song" - little extra jam to pump you up! The photo opportunities throughout the event and with the twins at the end were fabulous. The BBQ was a fun festive way to complete the day.

So impressed with how much we received for our entrance fee.

The event also did a great job of informing us to expect poor road conditions up front, and then went the extra mile to call out exceptionally bad roads. One person noted the check stations should have a jar to collect funds for Vashon Island road repairs!

Thanks for hosting such a great event. I hope it continues for years to come as we plan to participate.

37 Really enjoyed the ride despite all alliterations :)

I know this is a lot of work and I appreciate it as a rider.  I was worried about all those people on race bikes with the roads but seems like it turned out fine.

I made my own route this year with 30 mile plus lunch in town stop.

No feedback other than thank you!

38 Thank you for yet another fun (kinda sorta) P2P.  2022 is my 7th P2P and, as usual, ride day was super fun and well organized.  It seems as though there weren’t as many people this year??  I’m guessing the ferries being out of commission in the morning as well as the smoke kept some folks away.

The only comment I have would be on safety.  I know the course like the back of my hand having lived on Vashon and still riding on the island frequently.  There were several times that people were barreling down the hills and missed a turn, passing my me just as I was about to make a turn causing me to hit my brakes super hard to avoid a nasty collision.  I know you have signs that emphasize “slow down” but perhaps signs near (or just before) the turns on downhills might be helpful.

An example would be the turn off 103rd onto 112th (towards Patten Ave) - that is a steeper downhill with a turn to the left about 3/4 of the way down the hill.  I knew the turn was coming but 2 people didn't and as I slowed down to turn, they came screaming by me on my left missing the turn, and there was near disaster when I went to turn left.

The volunteers at the check points were terrific, and the check points were very well stocked with food & water.  I really appreciate not having to carry food & water for the entire day, and it's great that I can count on having more than adequate supplies.

39 The most iconic ride in the PNW, thanks to Colby and team.
Staid old STP. Frumpy RAMROD. Both brushed aside with the seemingly flawless execution of a big (and complicated) cycling event.
Sure it was hot, smoky and a few crap roads, oh well, no complaints - worth it!
Great vibe on the course at every stop - no exceptions.

40 Myself and a friend, ______, we’re scheduled to ride yesterday. We showed up for the 645 ferry in Tacoma.  It wasn’t running because there was no crew. They said they didn’t know if they would get any crew but that they hoped to get the ferry running for the 1005 crossing but they couldn’t guarantee anything. Because that was over three hours away and 30 minutes after the last riders were supposed to leave we elected to leave the area and do a ride elsewhere. We are bummed that we missed the ride.

Are you by any chance doing anything for those of us that were not able to attend this year at no fault of our own? There were at least two other riders in the same predicament who also elected to leave.

41 Ride well organized.  Pre-ride communications good.  check in was good. BBQ was delicious!
I did the Tourist. Had  a great time and did better than I thought I would.  Folks were super nice all around.  When I started out  I went RIGHT at the end of the driveway which I think is the correct way to go, even though the staff told me everyone goes left. The check in was not set up when I went tthrough at the HS to the lunch spot yet but not a problem  Tourist was well signed on the way to the sandwich stop. On the way back I somehow missed the HS turnoff, and then turned at the regular P2P an dended up at check point 11.  At 11 I asked if I was on the right route for tourist and they said yes.  Which of course was not right.  I went a bit further then stopped and checked my phone app.  At that point (and even at 11) I didn't want to go back UP.  So I had a super nice ride down to the bayfront.  Fun downhill and then nice level ride, I connected back up by taking SW quartermaster over to Vashon HWY.  Honestly I think this was a BETTER ride home, as it had few hills and I was a big leg tired by that point   Overall ride was 14.4 miles.  Had fun!
Other suggestion I have is that it would be nice if there was a 30 mile ride or so, that did NOT have the super steep hills, maybe up and around more of the island?  I think this would attract more people who are good but not super conditioned riders.

42 Hey there! P2P was definitely one of the best organized events I've been to! The volunteers' costumes were an utter delight, and the BBQ afterwards was absolutely delicious.

I did the 50mi route this year, but I'd love to do the 80mi route next year. The one thing I'm concerned about is speed - I'm not entirely sure when the stations start shutting down. I'd love some clarity around that so I know my target times!

I also know one of my fellow riders is allergic to nuts, and many of the stations had almost no nut-free snacks.

Thanks for putting together such an amazing event.

44 What a cool event!  I’m a first time P2P’er, long time idiot.  I loved the whole thing.

• Roads:  thanks for all the warnings.  The road was very ridable in all areas so I don’t feel like the “horrible condition” reputation is deserved.  The far far majority of the road was excellent and clean.   The road paint worked great as warnings and I appreciate that big undertaking to paint 80 miles of pavement.

• Checkpoints:  wow, great enthusiasm.  Loved rolling in to see what theme was next.  Special thanks to the ‘Ladies of the Night’ for the, uhhh….  cultural education. And elves and jet crew were a blast!

• I can think of two things the would have been nice additions:
    — if there was sunscreen before the Manzanita checkpoint I missed it.  That was a very welcome benefit but an earlier sunscreening would be nice

   — for communication ahead of time , I wasn’t sure what to expect for food/water.  For planning on what to bring, it would have helped to have more specifics like “all stations have water, and a few have electrolyte solutions”.  Or a list of a findings at a typical station would help know what things I would want to bring with me.

Hoping you keep this event going, I’ll be back!

45 Thanks for an exceptional event. This was my first time and it exceeded all expectations. Very well organized in all aspects within your control. The ferry situation only added to the unique sense of achievement you feel from this type of race.

I do want to give extra kudos in one particular area. I have done 40-50 bike races over the last ten years, including some of the biggest sportives in Europe (e.g. Tour of Flanders, Paris-Roubaix) and most races in the PNW. And you guys win on the best signage and most thorough route information at every checkpoint.

Good job!

47 Great event overall, thank you! This was my 5th time (4 idiots, 1 weasel)
A couple of suggestions:

- The clip in zone after the Sylvan Beach stop was too short/steep. Had to walk up to a flatter place. The setting is nicer than further up the hill like in past years though.

- Sandwiches at the High School for the 80mi riders. The Vashon town lunch stop is too soon if you are riding the full distance. You want to finish the Vashon hills, take a break w/real food, then head out for Maury. The stop had a few sandwhiches but ran out.

- Have pre-order cotton Tees for each year. They did this for The Burby this year and it worked out fine. You don’t have the shirt for the end of race but you have a nice memento for the event. Plus, you are not stuck with a bunch of left over shirts.

By the way, can I buy a 2017 M somehow?

48 I loved the ride but there were definitely some issues.  Pre ride communication was great, the stops were "manned" with energetic and helpful volunteers and you know how to make the ride fun.  I have to say though there were some places w
here there was a fork in the road and there was not clear signage for where to go.  This could have been solved with a couple of road stickers and chalk, also the roads are terrible in some areas they are down right dangerous.  I loved the sandwich stop and it was nice not to have that at the bottom of a hill and also in a place where weasels could enjoy.  The final BBQ is always really nice, the food is excellent and the beer is very appreciated.  Thanks for a great ride.  I look forward to better signage and hopefully better roads in the future.  Thanks

49 I had a wonderful ride! Last year Manzanita almost got me, this year Sandy Shores was the hardest for some reason. My favorite bit is finding the people who have never ridden on Vashon - the looks of disbelief while coming up from Lisabuela are particularly choice.

The smoke wasn't too bad until after I'd finished, but it seems like September is the time for wildfire smoke here - could the P2P be pushed later in the year? I know that means worse weather and maybe leaves on the road, but I'd rather deal with gross roads than gross air.

The volunteers were fantastic, the checkpoints were great, and the scene at the finish was awesome. BBQ is not a good meal for me after a ride like the idiot, but it was very tasty.

Thanks so much for putting on a killer event, I look forward to going very slightly faster next year,

50 As you’re well aware there was ferry issues and I arrived at Pt Defiance for the 6:45 ferry but after hearing there was no crew available I decided that some things just don’t work out and went back home. But considering how the air quality was that day and being in my 70’s I’m ok that I missed it. I finally did make it over yesterday and followed your wonderful arrows around the south portion of Vashon and all of Maury (paperboyed a couple of those climbs). The roads on Maury were very peaceful and there were some shoulder and road issues between Dockton and the Kiro tower.
Hopefully next year!

PS. The bakery goods and coffee at the Vashon Roasterie made for a delightful “checkpoint” and the staff there was great!

51 I had a beautiful experience on this exceptionally challenging ride! I loved meeting the people of Vashon. I was thrilled to see how much each checkpoint poured into the rider experience. I was met with grace at every stop and never felt like there was anything missing from the ride or the event.

As for the ride itself, Passport 2 Pain is truly unique. Why would you ride up and down a bunch hills that aren't part of an actual loop or ride? For streamers of course. I love exploring and navigating a new ride. When you're navigating sometimes you see a fork where you can go nice, flat, and easy, or up a big ass hill. The Passport 2 Pain, doesn't allow you that small courtesy of hope, it's the big ass hill, every time. I wasn't sure I could do this ride and when I finished, and somewhere around the 14th or 15th checkpoint, I said to myself, "I don't ever need to do this again." Now I can't wait for the next time and I'll be seeking new and bigger challenges so I can do it FASTER next year!

Thank you for the amazing and wholly unique cycling experience.
