Thank you for registering for Vashon Island's Passport2Pain bike ride – this Saturday, September 10th.
This intimidating wall of text contains important details about the ride; I hope you will read it.
Start Location
- P2P starts at the Vashon Island Rowing Club Boathouse in Jensen Point Park on Vashon Island's Burton Peninsula.
- Map: 8900 SW Harbor View Drive, Vashon, WA 98070
- You pay to get on the Island, but it's free to get off. Car & driver is $25.95; passengers or walk-ons are $5.95; there's a $1.00 bike charge if you ride on. There are discounts for those over 65.
- Bikes can ride onto the next ferry; cars have to wait in line -- although early on a Saturday morning you shouldn't have much competition for a spot.
- Know that the ferries, bless their hearts, don't always leave on time. Think of the ferry ride as part of your adventure. Click links below for schedules.
- From Seattle, take the Fauntleroy (West Seattle) to Vashon ferry. It goes to the north end of the Island.
- From Kitsap, take the Southworth -- Vashon route to the north end.
- It's a 20-minute drive from the north end ferry dock to Jensen point. 10 miles, 538' vertical
- From Tacoma: take the Pt. Defiance to Tahlequah (south end of Vashon) boat.
- It's a 12-minute drive from the south end to Jensen Point. 6 miles, 413" vertical.
- Metro route #118 doesn't start early enough on Saturdays to be of any use to P2P, but there are trips to the ferry terminals at both ends of the Island in the afternoon. h
- Schedule here.
- We regret that we are unable to offer a shuttle from and to the ferries this year.
- You can park on the shoulder of the road near the start area.
- Please, please park considerately: don't block driveways or mailboxes. We need the neighbors' support for this event to continue.
- Check in between 7:00 and 9:30 AM at Jensen Point Park.
- Pre-registered riders pick up your Passport, bib number (smaller numbers are older), and wristband for the barbecue.
- If you bought extra barbecue tickets, we can hold them for you until you finish.
- Walk-up registrations are welcome, but the price of procrastination is $25 (i.e., it's $125 to register day-of). The Tourist course will be $60 instead of $50.
- Please bring a credit card.
- Your Bib number will be in the 400s and will not reflect your spot in the rider age order, which means less fun all around.
- Tickets for your friends & relations will be available at the P2P Merchandise Tent at the Start/Finish area at Jensen Point Park.
- $20 each, while supplies last.
- At 7:30 we begin sending riders onto the course in groups of 2 or 3 per minute or so to minimize congestion of the roads and at the early checkpoints.
- By 9:30 the last stragglers will be on the course.
- Checkpoint opening and closing times will be posted at the checkpoints.
- You can switch courses and skip hills, but keep in mind not all checkpoints will be open all day.
- All checkpoints will have food and water for you.
- The Windermere Sandwich Stop in the middle of town will be open from 9:45 to 2:30.
- Obey all normal traffic rules! P2P riders don't own the road.
- Watch for P2P volunteers at tricky corners. Please follow their instructions to avoid tangling with traffic.
- All roads are open to automobiles and are two-way – even if the road is really narrow.
- Many of the roads are in terrible shape; worse than ever. Potholes are a real danger.
- Remember, P2P is a fun (in a weird sort of way) bike ride; IT IS NOT A RACE! Behaviors like close passing and line cutting are not welcome or appropriate. Please ride in the spirit of the event.
- It's a good idea to ride with your phone.
- We will have a supervised area for you to leave backpacks at the Start/Finish area
- Designated checkpoints will have clothing drops. We will bring your stuff back to the finish for you.
- Restrooms are available at the Start/Finish area and at several points along the course.
- Some restrooms are placed by P2P, others, at parks and the dump, are public.
- Checkpoint volunteers will be able to point you to the nearest one.
- If your bike breaks, we may be able to come and collect you. Call David Derrer at 206-619-8684 for help.
- Vashon Bikes in town will be open 10:00 - 6:00 for minor repairs. 206-999-1551.
- Jerseys from this and previous years, P2P socks and P2P hats will be available for purchase.
- If you pre-ordered an item, it will be waiting for you here, with your name on it.
- Enjoy the barbecue (with vegetarian options) at Jensen Point from 1:00 to 5:30 or so.
- Extra barbecue tickets will be at the Merchandise tent while supplies last.
Cheers from all ~75 of your P2P volunteers!
